Written by the apostle John (roughly A.D. 85–95). 1 John tests genuine faith through three marks — right belief about Christ, obedience to God's commands, and love for fellow believers — assuring readers that they can know they have eternal life.
John grounds Christian fellowship in the apostolic witness to the incarnate Word, declares that God is pure light, and calls believers to walk in that light through honest confession, love for one another, and resistance to a world passing away.
John unfolds the staggering love of God that makes believers children of God, calls them to love as evidence of new birth, and reaches its summit in the declaration that God himself is love — a love that drives out fear and demands a response.
John brings his letter to a close by grounding Christian assurance in faith in Jesus as the Son of God, the testimony of the Spirit through water and blood, and the repeated declaration that those who have the Son have life — and can know it.
