Written by Paul while imprisoned (roughly A.D. 60–62). Colossians proclaims the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ over all creation and all philosophy — countering false teaching by affirming that in Christ all the fullness of God dwells bodily.
Paul answers the Colossian heresy — a syncretistic philosophy threatening to displace Christ from the center — by proclaiming the cosmic supremacy of Christ in a soaring hymn, then declaring that in him alone the fullness of deity dwells and every spiritual need is met.
Because believers have been raised with Christ, Paul calls them to a thoroughgoing transformation — putting to death earthly vices, putting on the virtues of God's chosen people, and ordering every dimension of household and working life under the lordship of Christ.
